Products & Use

Is our mint organic?

Our mint oils are not considered organic due to the fact that we use herbicide and fertilizers on our crops to manage invasive weeds that could contaminate the oil quality and to promote higher yields.

Is it edible?

Yes, however when consuming our product, always be extra cautious because of the high concentration of menthol. Our oils are 100% pure making them 4x stronger than a mint extract you buy at the store. If you are using a recipe that uses extract but substituting for oil instead, we highly recommend you cut the measurement down by ¾ of what the recipe asks. For example, if a recipe asks for ⅛ tsp of extract, substitute for 1-2 drops of oil. Always taste as you go. You can add more but you can’t take away. **Please note that our oils are not FDA regulated and upon purchase, you agree to all terms and conditions of using our products.

How do I store it?

Storage of mint oils are best in amber glass or stainless steel bottles in a dark, cool place. With high concentration of menthol, these oils, overtime, can eat away at plastics and some metals which then contaminates the oil and can cause discoloration, oxidation, or impurities.

Can I use it on my children?

DO NOT use mint oils on children under the age of 3 and store in a place that is out of your child’s reach. Always consult your child’s pediatrician before use and follow proper dilution protocols.

Can I use it with pets in the home?

Yes, but be cautious in doing so. There are many benefits to using mint oil for pets such as freshening up bedding, getting rid of unwanted smells, and repelling pests like ticks or fleas. However, our mint oils are 100% pure and have high concentrations of menthol which can cause irritation to the respiratory system and eyes. Animals’ senses are much stronger than humans’ and so if you are having irritability while using mint oil, your animal is most likely experiencing it 2x worse.  Always consult your pet’s veterinarian with specific questions you may have.

What is the difference between peppermint and spearmint?

The biggest difference is menthol content. Peppermint contains about a 40% menthol content while spearmint contains less than 1%. Due to higher menthol, peppermint has more medicinal purposes with the numbing and cooling properties and gives more of a punch when using it for culinary purposes. Spearmint has a mild, sweet flavor and scent which makes it commonly used in fragrances, household products, mints, and oral hygiene products.

Is it the same type of mint that grows in my yard?

No. The mint plant commonly found in household gardens is called Mentha Arvensis. This variety of mint is hearty but does not produce high quality oil. The peppermint we grow on our farm is from a variety called Mentha Piperita-Black Mitcham and is much more difficult to grow and produces high quality leaves and oil. Our spearmint is similar and is grown from pure native mentha spicata varieties also producing higher quality oil.

How do I dilute it?

When diluting mint oil, be sure to select a carrier oil. Carrier oils include coconut, almond, olive, argan, avocado, sunflower, castor, canola, jojoba oils, and more. The recommended starting dilution for adult use is a 2% dilution. To achieve this ratio, simply add 2 drops of mint oil per 1 teaspoon or 5mL of carrier oil. If you desire a more potent mint ratio, simply reverse the process by adding drops of carrier oil to 1 teaspoon or 5 mL of the mint oil.

Is it safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Always consult with your doctor before using mint oils during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Use of mint essential oils is commonly used during pregnancy and can be a great natural alternative for medications to help relieve symptoms like nausea, restless leg, and headaches. While breastfeeding, mint is known to reduce lactation and cause milk supply to drop. You can use this to your advantage if you have an overproduction of milk or trying to dry up when your child is done breastfeeding. If you struggle to lactate and want to boost your milk supply, we recommend staying away from any foods or drinks containing mint.

The Farm

Where are you located?

We farm in Corinne, Utah — a tiny town just west of Brigham City, in the northern part of the state.

Can I visit the farm?

We don't host scheduled farm days, but we love meeting the people who use our mint. Send us a note through the contact page and we'll see if we can work out a visit.

How many acres do you run?

We run approximately 350 acres of peppermint and spearmint. We also grow wheat and lease some fields out to other local farmers who grow onions and corn on our farmland.

How do you distill the mint?

We use a steam distillation process. Using a large boiler to create steam, we pump the steam into the bed of loaded specialized mint trucks that “cook” the mint plants. The oil in the leaves stick to water droplets and evaporate into a gas form. We collect these minty vapors and run them through a set of cooling tanks to bring the vapor back into liquid form. Once a liquid, it’s transferred to a separator tank which allows the oil to float to the top of the water because of its lighter density. We then skim the oil off the water and recycle the water back into our distillation process. The oil is collected and stored in large 55 gallon barrels to be transported or placed into storage until used.
